Phil has always enjoyed designing outstanding golf experiences for players of all abilities. As one of the great players of all time, he’s had the opportunity to play many of the nation’s finest golf courses. A product of public golf as a junior, he’s keenly aware of what works for the average player as well as professional champions. As a creative shot-maker, he has an eye for as many options as possible from the tee through the green. Phil’s creative versatility isn’t limited to playing “inside the ropes” and his design ideas aren’t bound in design tradition, new or old. His basic concept is simple: to leave a lasting legacy that is “challenging fun.”
mickelson national golf club
Private - 18-hole Golf Course (design, opened 2020)
Mickelson National Golf Club is Phil’s first golf course design in Canada and the centerpiece of Harmony, a 1,700-acre community built by partners Qualico Communities, Bordeaux Developments and Windmill Golf.
The gently rolling foothills were transformed, with shaping and elevation change reflective of the nearby Canadian Rockies. Meandering lakes, foothill and prairie landscaping accentuate the golf course design. Phil designed the golf course to be true to the guiding principles of the community: purposeful, caring and stable. That is, complementing the fabric of family-oriented community, ensuring sustainability and honoring the legacy of the Copithorne family, which settled the land more than a century ago.
MICKELSON SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL
Private - 18-hole Championship Course and 18-hole Resort Course (design, open 2015)
Located near Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the 18-hole Championship Course is the jewel of a private master-planned community that also will include a luxury hotel and Phil Mickelson-designed 18-hole Resort Course.
The site has been meticulously designed to create meandering lakes, waterfalls and rolling terrain. Thousands of trees and lush landscaping has been brought in to frame the golf course.
The par-72 layout is as long as 7,600 yards. With winds off the nearby sea a constant factor, Phil has created wide fairways and generous greens, with subtle swales and humps in chipping areas on nearly every hole adding to the challenge.

Short Game Practice Area (design, opened 2011)
At one of the storied private clubs in Southern California, Phil transformed a little-used plot of two acres into enormously popular short game practice area. For decades this chipping area offered little in the way of shot making options. Now in that same space the chipping area is in the middle of four small greens, maximizing the use of the space and allowing for a variety of shots.
