(Las Vegas, November 24, 2018) – Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods squared off in Capital One’s The Match: Tiger vs. Phil from the exclusive Shadow Creek Golf Course in a thrilling match which saw Lefty reign supreme after four playoff holes. It was a four-foot birdie on the 22nd hole that took home the $9 million prize for Phil. Mickelson has had a Hall of Fame career, but he called this victory over Woods “very special.”
Phil and Tiger were neck-and-neck all day, as neither player ever led by more than one hole. Both shot 69 in the regulation holes, with Woods hitting six birdies and three bogeys while Mickelson shot three birdies.
The Match result didn’t go without some trash talk as Lefty had some words for Tiger after the win. “Just know I will never let you live that down,” Phil said after beating Woods. It’s not the Masters or the U.S. Open, but it is nice to have a little something on you.”
Phil then took to Twitter to let Tiger know what the day meant to him.
Mickelson also had the advantage in the side challenges during the match. Woods won the first challenge for $200,000 when Mickelson didn’t birdie the first hole. Mickelson though won the next three, which were closest-to-the-pin challenges on par-3 holes, which totaled $600,000. Phil previously announced that The Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation will contribute his winnings from the side challenges to charities including Birdies for the Brave, Generation Justice, Children of the 58, and others.
Phil and Tiger did something that has never been done before, and the excitement was felt all around. They had fellow athletes and fans on social media buzzing all throughout The Match.
What an incredible event.
